Sinatra vs GitHub Copilot coding agent

GitHub's own asynchronous agent, which its documentation now also calls the Copilot cloud agent. Compared here on the agent that opens pull requests, not on Copilot completions or Copilot Chat in your editor.

This is the closest competitor Sinatra has, and it got closer this year. Copilot's coding agent starts from a GitHub issue, assigns natively from Linear, and bills tokens at the providers' own published rates. Two differences remain and they are the whole argument: Copilot's bring-your-own-key works in your editor and CLI but not in the cloud agent on GitHub.com, and there is no way to point it at a Claude or ChatGPT subscription you already pay for. If you are inside Copilot Business and happy with the credit maths, stay.

  1. Yes means the vendor's own app starts a run from the issue itself, with nothing to commit to the repo first. Sinatra's trigger is the Sinatra label that ships with the GitHub App install (`sinatraai` on the hosted app). Partial means either that a workflow file and an API-key secret have to be added per repository first, or that the mention only works on pull requests and not on issues.
  2. Yes means assigning the ticket to the agent in Linear starts the run. Partial means the run starts some other way: an attachment link you click, or a trigger you configure yourself against Linear's webhooks. Assignment on its own does nothing.
  3. Yes means a changes-requested review is enough on its own: Sinatra reworks the branch and pushes the follow-up commit with no re-trigger and no mention. Partial means the agent acts only when it is @-mentioned in the thread, or only while its original session is still open.
  4. Yes means your own provider API key runs the agent everywhere the product runs it. Partial means keys work on some surfaces but not the one being compared here, either because the vendor documents them as local-CLI-and-desktop only, or because it never documents them covering its cloud agent at all.
  5. Yes means a Claude Pro/Max or ChatGPT subscription you already pay for authenticates the run on the vendor's hosted cloud. Partial means it works only where that CLI's login already sits on the machine: your own laptop or a self-hosted backend, not a clean cloud sandbox.
  6. Yes means you are never charged a marked-up model rate, either because you pay your provider directly, or because the vendor publishes the same per-token rates the provider does, or because model use is included in a flat plan with a published allowance. Partial means the answer depends on which plan you are on: no fee on the individual tiers, a published per-token fee on the team ones, charged even against your own key.
  7. Both halves have to be published: the plan price, and the rate for work past the plan. A published seat price sitting on top of an undisclosed credit, compute unit, or quota size is partial.
  8. Yes means the free tier states its daily allowance as a number. Sinatra's is 5 tasks a day with your own key or a Codex subscription, 1 a day on Sinatra's keys, no card. Partial means a free plan exists but its allowance is not published.
  9. Yes means you can run without supplying a model key at all, because the vendor bills you for the model.
  10. Yes means an editor plugin or a desktop app; partial means a terminal CLI and nothing that runs inside an editor. Sinatra has neither, on purpose: the work starts in the tracker and comes back as a pull request. If you want an assistant inside your editor, that is a real reason to pick one of these instead, and several teams run both.
  11. Sinatra has no Slack trigger. GitHub and Linear are the only two ways to start a run, and a Slack-first team should weigh that.
  12. Yes means you can run the agent on infrastructure you control, or the source is open. Partial means execution or inference can be pointed at your own account while the product itself stays the vendor's and stays closed. Sinatra is hosted only; there is no self-managed build.

How you start a task

On GitHub these two are now very similar, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest. A GitHub App cannot be an issue assignee, which is why Sinatra uses a label where Copilot, being first-party, does not have to. Different plumbing, same gesture.

Linear used to be the clean line between them. Not any more. GitHub made Copilot's Linear integration generally available in July 2026: assign dropdown, GitHub Copilot, draft pull request, progress on the timeline. That is what Sinatra does. It needs a paid plan.

Where they still diverge is after review. Request changes on a Sinatra pull request and the follow-up commit lands on its own. Copilot's docs are explicit that you "mention @copilot in a comment on an existing pull request to ask it to make changes." One extra step, every round, from the reviewer already in the diff.

What it costs, in dollars

GitHub publishes both halves, which is more than most of this market manages: the plan price, and per-token rates past the included allowance, where one AI credit is one cent. The Anthropic rows match Anthropic's own list prices. Copilot is not marking up your tokens.

So the money argument is not markup. It is ownership. Every token runs through GitHub's billing relationship, which means the Claude Max or ChatGPT plan already on your company card does nothing for your Copilot invoice, and prepaid credits only spend inside Copilot.

Sinatra splits it: $20 per member per month for sandboxes and orchestration, and the model bill on your provider's invoice at their rate. Or nothing, on a subscription you already hold.

Where Sinatra wins

Your key runs the cloud task. Copilot's BYOK covers editors, the CLI, the app, and the SDK; the agent on GitHub.com is on neither the local nor the enterprise list. With Sinatra there is one credential and it works everywhere.

A subscription you already bought can do the work, which Copilot has no equivalent for at any tier. The free tier runs a real task on the same agent paying customers get: 5 tasks a day with your own key or Codex, 1 a day on ours. No card. Copilot Free caps completions and excludes the cloud agent entirely, so there is no free way to try it on a real ticket. And review is the instruction, so requesting changes is enough on its own.

Where Copilot wins

Copilot is a first-party feature of the platform your code already lives on, and several of its advantages are structural.

It is already installed. If your org pays for Business, the agent is there, governed by policies you already set, on the identity system you already run. Nothing to procure, no new vendor in the data map. That is worth more than most feature comparisons admit.

It has far more entry points, and four editors with completions and Chat that Sinatra will never offer. Model choice inside the plan is also simpler than bring-your-own-key for teams that do not want to hold provider accounts: pick a model, GitHub bills the tokens at the published rate. And it is one invoice, with budgets and cost centers GitHub already gives you, where Sinatra deliberately hands you two.

Most people searching this are not unhappy with the output. They are looking at a credit line they cannot forecast, or they already pay for Claude Max and cannot see why they are buying the same tokens twice.

The change Sinatra makes is narrow: the model relationship comes back to you. Connect your key or your subscription and every hosted task runs on it. The seat stays $20 per member per month and does not move with usage. The trigger stays where it was, a label on a GitHub issue or an assignment in Linear.

If instead you want Copilot in Jira, in Slack, or inside Visual Studio, Sinatra is not the answer and the evaluation doc should say so.

Switching, or running both

Copilot's trigger is an assignment or an agents-panel session; Sinatra's is a label. They do not see each other and neither merges. Hand the same five tickets to both, compare the pull requests, then compare the invoices, counting what your provider billed you directly on the Sinatra side. Since the seat prices are a dollar apart, that is the whole trade.

Can the Copilot coding agent be assigned a GitHub issue?

Yes, and GitHub lists issues alongside Slack, Teams, Jira, Azure Boards, Linear, and four editors. Sinatra uses a label instead, because a GitHub App cannot be an issue assignee.

Does Copilot mark up model tokens?

Not on the published table: rates are in AI credits at $0.01 a credit and the Anthropic rows match Anthropic's list prices. What you cannot do is take the model relationship elsewhere.

Can I use my own API key with the Copilot coding agent?

Not in the cloud. GitHub documents local bring-your-own-key for editors, the CLI, the app, and the SDK, and enterprise BYOK for Chat, the CLI, and IDEs; the agent on GitHub.com is on neither list.
